April 21, 2024 — Shanghai International Circuit — China

My first ever Formula One Grand Prix.

I didn’t go, but it was the first race I had ever watched from start to finish. April was the start of a new sport for me, and it’s become excitingly addicting. Growing up I watched many sports on T.V. and attended many games in person. Hockey games, football games, soccer games, baseball games, you name it. But nothing seemed to draw my attention more than Formula One. It feels like a proud moment for me, to know how something runs, how races are decided, how divers and constructors get points, and if people ask questions, I can answer them. Having Italian and German grandparents, I already had a deep appreciation for Europe, so appreciating Formula one made me feel connected to those countries even more. Of course you’re probably thinking my favourite team is Ferrari, however, you’d be mistaken. I absolutely love the Scuderia and the Tifosi, but they aren’t the team that caught my attention. That award would have to go to the Papayas, McLaren.

I think I can blame my appreciation for McLaren on the edits of Lando Norris I got on my TikTok FYP because they really converted me to become a fan. That really jumpstarted my interest in the sport. I was also very inclined to watch all six seasons of Drive to Survive on Netflix, which as a newcomer to the sport, gave me the background information I needed, and specific details about how the sport runs. It is explained beautifully in the docuseries but at its core, Formula One is a test of speed, skill, and strategy. Drivers maneuver around circuits at mind-boggling speeds, pushing themselves and their machines to the limit in pursuit of glory. But Formula One isn't just about who can drive the fastest; it's a complex dance of aerodynamics, tire management, and race craft. Once you start watching F1, you can't stop. I wouldn't call it an obsession, but it's a passion.

Formula One is more than just a sport; it's a global phenomenon that transcends borders and cultures. With races held in countries across five continents, it brings people together from all walks of life, united by their passion for speed and competition. Whether it's the historic streets of Monaco or the high-speed thrills of Monza, each circuit has its own unique charm and challenges. Canada to Austria, to Brazil, back to Belgium. It's a crazy on the road experience that ignites the passion for the most awaited race in these cities, and you're lucky if you live remotely close. I'm making it my mission to attend at least one race in my lifetime. My goal is Montreal 2025, but anything can happen. My fingers are crossed.

Formula One is a rich man's sport. There is no doubt about that. There is extreme wealth embedded in the sport, in the most lavish cities in the most beautiful countries around the world. Name another sport that travels the globe the majority of the calendar year. As the pinnacle of motorsport, Formula One continues to push the boundaries of what's possible, inspiring generations of fans and drivers alike.
